"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Hungary ...

Palinka is a traditional type of brandy that is produced in Hungary and Romania, mostly in Transylvania, a region in central Romania formerly belonging to Hungary. It’s history dates back 500 years, when it was used as a medicinal beverage. Palinka was believed to be a sort of digestive aid, the high alcohol content of palinka was thought to aid in the digestion of the fatty foods traditionally eaten in Hungary.

Palinka is a double distilled beverage made from a variety of fruits like plums, apricots, apples, mulberry and quince. Using any of these ingredients, the drink is double-distilled.

The most popular types of palinka include Alma palinka, made from apples, Barack palinka, made from apricots, Cseresznye palinka, made from cherries, Korte palinka, made from pears and Szilva palinka, made from plums.

The alcohol content varies, with 40% or less more being the norm. Homemade palinkas typically have a higher alcohol content than 40%. The most alcoholic palinkas are (informally) referred to as "kerítésszaggató" in Hungarian, which literally means "fence-ripper" (referring to a drunkard's loss of balance). These potent, home-made, "házi" (home-made) palinkas are not commercially available but are nonetheless very common.

Palinka is best enjoyed at room temperature and should be tasted similar to the way one would taste wine. Savor the aroma and swish the liquid around in your mouth and under your tongue so that your taste buds can fully absorb the beverage.

If you are visiting Pune, then you’ve got to eat at Spice Garden – old timers will remember it as Farshid’s.

Though the restaurant is located near the well-known Dhole Patil Road, you may have to do some alley-hunting till you find it. But it is definitely worth the effort.

They serve some mouth-watering continental and Indian food. Specializing in diverse cuisines like French, Italian, Tandoori and Mangalorean, the restaurant offers a vast selection of meats and vegetables. The sea-food is top rated.

You will love their tandoori Surmai (king-fish) chunks. Also a Gassi with either the appam or neer dosa. The gassi is a Konkan curry that is made of grated coconut and spices with prawns, fish or chicken.

Spice Garden also has an interesting list of spirits and cocktails. Beer is served in wonderful brass beer mugs, which somehow adds to the taste.

The ambience is pleasant - modern, chic, richly colored, decorated with murals and mirrors. All in all, the food and overall experience, are complete winners.

Drunken Humor

The other night I was invited out for a night with the girls. I promised my husband that I would be home by midnight. Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3am, a bit loaded, I headed for home.

Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed three times. Quickly realizing my husband would wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution (even when totally smashed) in order to escape a possible conflict.

The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in and I told him "Midnight". He didn't seem angry at all. Whew!! Got away with that one!

Then he said, "We need a new cuckoo clock." When I asked him why, he said "Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said, Oh sh*t, cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and burped."
