"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Germany ...

Apfelwein (known in English as apple wine) is the German form of cider, made from apples. It's a local drink that you won't find outside the Rhein-Main area of Frankfurt, Germany. It has an alcohol content of 7%–10% by volume and a tart, sour taste.
The process of making apfelwein begins with the apple harvest in September and October. The best apfelwein is said to come from mature apples that have fallen from the trees. In fact, for making apfelwein nearly any fallen apple is used. The apples might have worms inside, wasps, flies, hornets and bees but the locals swear that this randomly fluctuating quality of apples contributes to the special flavour of apfelwein.

This mixed basket of apples is carried to a place called kelter. Here the fruity goods are squeezed, pressed and smashed until the last drop of apple juice is gained. After about 10 to 13 weeks the apfelwein is ready to drink.

Apfelwein has its own special glass called the gerippte or ribbed glass, which contains a quarter of a litre. Apfelwein, like beer, tastes different if you drink it from other glasses.

If you're drinking it in company, apfelwein is served in a vessel called a bembel which has a capacity of about two and a half litres. It is usually painted with flowers, seals, and names in deep blue against a grey background.

The name Äppler, mainly propagated by large producers, is generally not used in restaurants or by smaller manufacturers, who instead call the beverage Schoppen or Schoppe, which is referring to the measure of the glass.

Drunken Humor

You know you're a habitual drinker when...
  • You get lost crossing the street.
  • You take pub crawls very literally.
  • You take off your hat and strangers drop change into it. Not that you’re complaining.
  • You can’t stand tomato juice but love those Bloody Marys.
  • Your bar tabs impact the international price of wheat and barley.

Trivia

An alcohol beverage cannot be over 190% proof (95% alcohol). At a higher proof, the beverage will draw moisture from the air and self-dilute.

Random quote of the month

Giving up drinking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times!
