"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Italy ...

Amaretto is a sweet almond-flavoured liqueur of Italian origin. Surprisingly, it may or may not contain almonds. It is made from a base of apricot or almond pits, or sometimes both, with added spices and flavourings. Amaretto is Italian for "a little bitter” and refers to the slightly bitter aftertaste Amaretto sometimes has. However, the bitterness is not unpalatable, and the flavor is enhanced by sweeteners, and sometimes sweet almonds.

The original version was made in Saronno, Italy way back in the 16th century. The recipe of original Amaretto di Saronno was supposedly passed down through the generations and is used as the basis by popular brands like Amaretto di Saronno or DiSaronno Originale.

The original was most likely a stock of grape brandy that had apricot pits infused in it. Today's amaretto is typically made with the oil of apricot kernel that has been infused with alcohol, burnt sugar, and a mixture of fruits and herbs. The pits of apricots typically make up the main base, but occasionally the pits of cherries or peaches may be used.

Overall, the taste of amaretto is very sweet with a strong taste of almonds, leading many people to describe it as a sort of liquid marzipan. It has rapidly become one of the most popular drinks for making cocktails and it also serves a variety of culinary uses.

Leopold or Leo’s as it is popularly called is one of Mumbai’s oldest Irani-run establishments; hey but wait a minute, that’s a misnomer! ‘Cause Leo’s is markedly different – its an institution, a landmark, by itself.

Once inside you could easily be ‘lost in transition’ and think you are in a French café`, thanks to the number of tourists that always exceed the desis, sometimes you’re lucky to find an Indian face!

Sitting at the tables sipping a beer and watching the hustle-bustle of Mumbai outside, you will surely wonder why you hadn’t visited Leo's earlier?! Besides the foreigners, its frequented by budding poets, you might catch a glimpse of the occasional model, TV or Bollywood star. Despite the prices being hiked after their makeover, the place is still extremely economical and value for money. Their beef chilly and fried rice is a fantastic combo and a must-have. Also try the prawns in butter and garlic, simply awesome! Service is fast and good.

Trincas, located in the heart of Kolkata city, is much more than just an eating place. It is almost an institution in itself. The 50-year old restaurant is known for serving great food and its fantastic Live Music performances.

Trincas started as a tea room, progressed to being a confectionery and later become a restaurant and bar. Trincas started with Continental and Indian food. The tetrazzinis and a la kievs are some of the hot favorites on the menu. In the Indian section, the kebabs are simply delicious. In the early 80s, Trincas introduced Chinese and recently they further expanded their palette with Southern Spice, a south Indian cuisine restaurant! Trincas also has a ‘Big Bite’ section which offers quick meals to office goers. The well-stocked bar serves various exotic spirits and cocktails.

Over the years, the ambience also changed from being heavily Victorian to becoming more contemporary (see pics).

Trincas is a must visit restaurant for its Live Music. It has been the launching pad for performers like Usha Uthup, Freddy Mercury and Pam Crains. The restaurant fully lives up to its motto of offering good food and good music and having lots of fun!

Drunken Humor

Three animals in a bar were having an argument over who was the best.
The first animal, a hawk, claimed that because of his ability to fly, he could attack anything repeatedly from above, and his prey had hardly a chance.
The second, a lion, based his claim on his strength. No one in the jungle dared to challenge him, King of the Jungle.
The third, a skunk, insisted he needed neither flight nor strength to frighten off any creature with his unique arsenal.

As the three debated the issue, a grizzly bear came along and
swallowed them all: hawk, lion and stinker!

Trivia

Shakespeare referred (in Love's Labour Lost, Act 5, Scene 1) to a game called "flap-dragon," in which the players snatched raisins from a dish of burning brandy and extinguished them in their mouths before eating them.
