"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Mexico...

Mezcal is a Mexican distilled liquor made from the juice and pulp of the agave plant, a spiky-leafed member of the lily family. There are many different types of agaves, and each produces a different mezcal.

Mezcal can be consumed as a straight drink or in cocktails. You can also choose the mezcal on the basis of aging -- joven mezcals are very young. The 'strongest' drink is the joven white mezcal. Smoother options include reposados, aged for two months, and añejo, aged for at least one year.

The famous "worm" that is found in some bottles of Mezcal (con gusano -- "with worm") is actually the larva of one of two moths that live on the agave plant.
The reason for adding the worm to the bottle of Mezcal is obscure. But one story is that the worm serves as proof of high proof, which is to say that if the worm remains intact in the bottle, the percentage of alcohol in the spirit is high enough to preserve the pickled worm. Consuming the worm, which can be done without harm, has served as a rite of passage for generations of fraternity boys.

As a rule, top-quality mezcals do not include a worm in the bottle.

Drunken Humor

Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender, "Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman."

"Oh yeah?" said Charlie "And how did this one end?"

"When it was over," Mike replied, "she came to me on her hands and knees. "Really," said Charlie, "now that's a switch! What did she say?"

She said, "Come out from under the bed, you chicken."

Trivia

Body or Lightness of Whiskey

The body or lightness of whiskey is primarily determined by the size of the grain from which it is made; the larger the grain, the lighter the whiskey. For example, whiskey made from rye, with its small grain size, is bigger or fuller-bodied than is whiskey made from corn, with its large grain size.
