"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Russia ...

Kvass is a fermented, mildly alcoholic, beverage made from rye bread. It is one of Russia’s national alcoholic drinks, popular since the 16th century. It is widely used for its many health benefits. The Russians drink Kvass simply because it makes one feel better as it contains lots of vitamins, free amino acids, micro elements and lactic acid. It is said to improve digestion, boost metabolism, help prevent infections and keep the heart and circulatory system healthy.

Kvass is made by simultaneous alcoholic and acidic fermentation of wheat, rye, barley and buckwheat meal, or of rye-bread, with the addition of sugar or fruit. Sometimes called “Russian cola”, Kvass is popular with people of all ages.

Though in the large towns it is made commercially, elsewhere it is frequently produced at home. In the past, almost everyone in Russia used to make their own Kvass. Monks, farmers, doctors, noblemen and even soldiers left behind plenty of recipes. At that time every sour drink was called Kvass. It was brewed of fruit, berries or honey with herbs and spices, and also of bread. When people hear the word "Kvass" today they usually think of a bread drink that has a pleasant sour taste and bread flavour.

The alcohol content in Kvass (0.7 to 2.2%) is very low and considered acceptable even for children! Kvass is often sold right on the street from mobile tanks.

For once, a pub with more than just one room… 10 Downing Street is a famous address in London, and the Chennai counterpart bears a remarkable resemblance to the original. Madras Chambers is a private room, reserved for gatherings, like birthdays, anniversaries, or just any celebration. Images of old Madras—brown and frayed and from decades ago—delicately decorate its walls.

Designed to reflect the famous London pub culture, the mood borrows from British architecture, hospitality and philosophy (of partying, ofcourse!) The long bar counter, with its wooden structure, cuts the room into half along its length, providing thirsty party animals more space to crowd around the watering hole.

10 Downing Street attracts crowds on Thursdays for their karaoke night, Fridays for their retro music and Saturdays for a time-to-unwind party time. The dance floor, however, can be used only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday is generally ‘chilled out’ and the music reflects this mood.

The 10 Downing Street feel is complete with name-plates ‘Maggie’ and ‘Major’ on the doors of the women’s and men’s restrooms!
