"Local" Drinks across the World
This month from Mexico...

Pulque is a traditional alcoholic beverage of Mexico made from the fermented juice of the maguey plant.

It is a thick, white-colored drink of 4-8% alcohol made by a brief fermentation of the sap of the maguey plant (often called Century Plant in English). It is different from tequila and mescal in that it is not distilled. Like beer, Pulque has low alcohol content but contains vegetable proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins, so it also acts as a nutritional supplement in many local communities.

Sometimes pulque is mixed with fruit juices such as mango and pineapple or pureed nuts for drinking, and to make it sweeter. When pulque is mixed with juices to make it palatable for those who do not appreciate its unusual flavor it is called curado.

Pulque must be drunk within a day after its 36-48 hour fermentation, or refrigerated, and is famous for its awful smell when allowed to putrify. Pulque contains albumins, which when allowed to putrify, cause a terrible stench.

Most middle class Mexicans turn up their noses at the mention of pulque. It is considered a crude, peasant drink, and not nearly as desirable as beer and spirits. Part of pulque’s bad reputation comes from years of abuse by alcoholic campesinos, who would drink gallons of it daily, starting in the morning and going all day.

Pulque is sold in casual backyard type businesses called pulquerías.

Dining Destinations

Trishna
Mumbai

Trishna is a seafood legend in Mumbai and considered one of the best in the world. The restaurant serves a variety of sea food dishes cooked in different styles. It is famous for its crab preparations and the Butter pepper garlic king crab is a hot favorite. Other must-try dishes include the pomfret hariyali and fish sholay kebabs.

Though Trishna is primarily a seafood destination, surprisingly the vegetarian dishes are also quite delicious. Recommended dishes are the Hyderabadi Daal, paneer dishes and chole with some garlic naan!

The ambience is simple and service good. Everyone is here for the grub and this is where Trishna scores a 10 on 10!

Since this place is always packed at night, better to get in with a reservation to avoid the endless waiting.

Drunken Humor

A Panda walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a meal. When the meal finally arrives, he eats it quickly, then shoots a drunk, and leaves the bar.

A patron walks over to the bartender and asks, "What was that all about?"

The bartender replies, "Look up 'panda' in the dictionary, pal."

And so, the patron retrieves his Webster's dictionary from his coat pocket and looks up the word 'panda.'

"What's it say?" asks the bartender.

The patron replies with a grin, "Eats shoots and leaves."

Trivia

Gin and Tonic Cocktail

East India Company officials gave the world the gin and tonic cocktail, albeit accidentally. Indian tonic water contained quinine, which was used as an anti-malarial agent. However, the water's bitter taste made it difficult to drink it straight. So, the company officials mixed the tonic water with dry gin and created the classic cocktail.
